COVID-19 Vaccine - At the present time we are not able to say when the vaccine will be available for patients or how the roll out of the vaccine will be conducted.  As we learn more we will update this section of the website.

A named accountable GP for all patients

What does 'named accountable GP' mean?

This is a General Medical Service (GMS) contractual requirement introduced in 2015 for GP Practices to provide a named and accountable GP for each of their patients, including children.

What does 'accountable' mean?

The named accountable GP takes responsibility for the co-ordination of all appropriate services delivered to each patient - where required (based on the clinical judgement).

The requirement has not changed patient care. It has been introduced to reassure patients that they have one GP within the practice who is responsible for ensuring that the right services are carried out on their behalf.

Does it mean the named accountable GP has 24-hour responsibility for their patients?

No. The named GP will not:

  • take on vicarious responsibility for the work of other doctors or health professionals
  • take on 24-hour responsibility for the patient, or have to change their working hours. The requirement does not imply personal availability for GPs throughout the working week
  • be the only GP or clinician who will provide care to that patient

Can patients choose their own named GP?

Practices are required to simply allocate a named GP for each patient. However, if a patient requests a particular GP, reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate their preference. There are occasions when the practice may not feel the patient's preference is suitable.

Do patients have to see their named GP when they book an appointment with the practice?

No. Patients can and should feel free to choose to see any GP or nurse in the practice in line with current arrangements.

If you would like to know who your allocated GP is you can telephone the surgery on 01432 860235.
